This demonstration uses a vacuum pump to lower the pressure enough on the surface of a liquid to make the liquid boil. A series of questions leads to student understanding of how vapor pressure and boiling are related.
How does a solution conduct? What specifically happens during the electrolysis of copper chloride?
Solid copper(II)chloride is combined with aluminum metal, and the reaction is so slow it appears there is no reaction. A small amount of water is added, and soon a vigorous reaction can be observed.
Students observe and interpret a demo to develop two concepts. Substances of the same/similar bond type dissolve in one another. Substances of different molecule type do not mix.
